Prof Archampong

TRIBUTE TO THE LATE PROF. EMMANUEL QUAYE ARCHAMPONG (BSc., MB, ChB, FRCS, FRCS, FWACS, FICS, FGA, FGCS)

Prof. Emmanuel Quaye Archampong, a renowned surgeon whose dedication to duty, selflessness, and love for humanity will continue to be enshrined in our memory and that of generations yet unborn. The Medical and Dental Council shall forever remember your contributions to regulation in the country especially your passion for excellence in practice standards.

Prof. Archampong born on 12th October 1933 was registered with the Medical and Dental Council, Ghana in April, 1973.

Prof. Archampong obtained his primary qualification (MB, BS) from the University College Hospital, London Medical School in 1961 with distinctions in Pathology, Applied Pharmacology and Therapeutics. He was awarded a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons, Edinburgh and the Royal College of Surgeons, England in 1966. He obtained Master of Surgery Degree from the University of London in 1974.

Prof. Archampong was the first Ghanaian to earn a Master of Surgery degree, and an Honorary Senior Lectureship in Surgery, University College Hospital, London Medical School. He was an emeritus Professor of the College of Health Sciences, University of Ghana Medical School, Legon, an honorary Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of England, a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, a Fellow of
the International College of Surgeons, a Fellow of the Ghana Academy of Arts and Sciences, a foundation Fellow of the West African College of Surgeons and a visiting professor to a number of Universities and Colleges of Medicine locally, regionally, and internationally.

Prof. Archampong served as the Chairman of the Credentials Committee of the Medical and Dental Council, Ghana and an Oral Examiner for the Council’s Registration Examination for foreign trained medical and dental practitioners. As an astute practitioner, Prof. Emmanuel Quaye Archampong provided the needed guidance and directions to the Committee and the Council.

Prof. Archampong; a quintessential gentleman, surgeons’ surgeon, a consummate scientist, an academic, a researcher, a great teacher of medicine, a mentor, a counsellor, and a great inspirer of generations of doctors. You were excellence clothed in humility.
